Will Your Air-Conditioner Cope This Summer?

With higher than average rainfall and temperatures predicted from November to January this year, your air-conditioner is going to be working overtime. As your air conditioner cools the air, it also provides natural dehumidification. Cool air holds less moisture than warm air. As air passes over the evaporator cool to deposit its heat, it also leaves behind some of its humidity.

For your air-conditioner cope with above average temperatures and humidity, it's extremely important that it works to the best of it's ability.

  1. Clean the filters and ducting or arrange for a professional service.

  2. Check and clean the outdoor areas of your system.

  3. Change the mode and temperature settings.

  4. Redirect louvres.

  5. Ready your house.

Ensure all blinds are closed during the day to block sunlight which will ultimately heat up your home. Removing floor rugs will also help keep the ambient temperature down. These few tips will not only help your air conditioner cool the room but will also help you save on running costs throughout the warmer months.

You should also test your system looking for obvious and not so obvious issues;

  1. Is cool air coming out of the vents?

  2. Are there any strange sounds, such as banging or motor/condenser noises?

  3. Can you notice any leaking or hissing pipes?

  4. Are there bad smells?

  5. Does the fan create a strong breeze?

  6. Are the appropriate functions all working?

If you’d like to consider replacing or upgrading your air conditioner we can help with that. Many ducted systems and some split systems have a "dry mode" function, a great feature to use during those wet, humid days and will help to keep your home mould free (well almost). Smart zone control systems of many modern systems provides the ultimate climate control at your fingertips. If this is something you are interested in then contact us today to find out more.

If you have allergy or asthma sufferers in your household you really should be concerned about the quality of air in your home and we strongly recommend a unit with an inbuilt air purifier. The air you and your family are breathing should be clean and “lurgy” free.

Ensure the type and size of air-conditioner unit is suitable for your home, space and lifestyle. Not all types are suitable for all areas. Good insulation also ensures your unit works effectively and use less power to get the job done. These days, home air conditioners basically come in six types:

  1. Window Air Conditioners

  2. Through the wall Air Conditioners

  3. Portable Air Conditioners

  4. Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners

  5. PTAC Cooling & Heating

  6. Central Air Conditioning

1. WINDOW AIR-CONDITIONERS - These units are popular among some homeowners and more so to renters because these units don’t require any elaborate installation and are very compact. They are also very cheap to purchase and operate.

2. THROUGH THE WALL AIR-CONDITIONERS - Due to this special design, through the wall air conditioners have higher cooling capacities than windows units but also weigh more. These units also require you to cut a hole into your wall to mount the unit.

3. PORTABLE AIR-CONDITIONERS - The major advantage of these devices are:

  • They can be placed on the floor

  • Do not need any permanent installation

  • Can be moved around from room to room

  • Are inexpensive to operate

An exhaust hose is required to carry hot air out of a room and expel it through a window vent or wall opening. It is important to note that even larger versions of these appliances are best suited for areas measuring less than 40 square metres.

4. DUCTLESS MINI SPLIT AIR-CONDITIONERS - Very popular among homeowners and commercial property owners, these systems are quiet due to the actual noise making condenser being located outdoors, while the inside contains wall-mounted blowers.

Depending on the capacity, the same outdoor unit can be connected to more than one inside blower, which can be installed in one large room or several rooms with individual cooling controls.

5. PTAC COOLING & HEATING - A packaged terminal air conditioner (often abbreviated PTAC) is a type of self-contained heating and cooling system commonly found in hotels, motels, senior housing facilities, hospitals, and apartment buildings. These units are most commonly chosen for commercial properties.

4. CENTRAL AIR-CONDITIONERS - Central units are the most efficient and also the largest system you can have for a home or office building. Ideal for large commercial properties, but many new home builders/owners are choosing this type of air conditioner. There is almost no noise from these types of air conditioning systems because the loud condenser unit is located outdoors and vents can be located in a room’s ceiling or floor. Central air conditioners also act as dehumidifiers. Moisture is not as much of an issue as in other models or designs but there can be frosting in the vents or ducts if proper cooling settings are not used and if the system is not maintained.

Choosing the right unit for your space and lifestyle can make all the difference for your comfort and power costs. Contact us now for a review or quote on your new system.
